Specialist Upper GI Surgery in Norfolk
Ongoing research into stem cells and Barrett's Oesophagus, in collaboration with the University of East Anglia.

There are a number of research projects we are currently involved in. Through a link with the University of East Anglia and the Institute of Food Research, a number of junior doctors have obtained MD theses through our department.
Current work involves examination of human stem cells in the colon and in Barrett's Oesophagus, a pre-malignant disease of the oesophagus, run through the lab in the School of Biology by Dr Mark Williams.
Outcomes of surgical procedures are routinely collected locally and nationally, and can be accessed through AUGIS (National OG cancer audit), the National Bariatric Surgery Registry and PHIN (the Private Healthcare Information Network). A number of randomised trials based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital have been performed and published, including studies on intravenous fluid restriction in GI cancer surgery, pre-operative very low calorie diet in laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and post-operative statin therapy in oesophageal cancer.
